Tokyo Game Show: Everything You Need to Know
Another big week for big announcements.
PlayStation made a big splash this week with another slate of exciting trailers. We finally saw some Wolverine gameplay, and it looks as visceral and R-rated as you’d expect. There’s also newly confirmed release dates for Crimson Desert, The Seven Deadly Sins: Origins, and Nioh 3, among other cool announcements. Did you know Mega Man is joining Sonic in his new kart racing game?
This State of Play coincides with Tokyo Game Show, which brought some other cool news. For example, Xbox has confirmed the new Forza Horizon game, and it’s set in Japan. Even cooler, it’s also releasing on PS5 some time after it launches next year on PC and Xbox.
Professional eccentric Hideo Kojima got in on the fun too, revealing more information about his upcoming of games, like OD and Physint. Turns out, OD is shaping up to be a lot like another PT.
Additionally, Ryu Ga Gotoku held its own showcase, where they confirmed Yakuza Kiwami 3 is coming. It’s coming with a little spinoff called Dark Ties, which will follow the game’s antagonist Yoshitaka Mine.
And finally, while we’re recapping some Tokyo Game Show news, Annapurna also revealed a slate of new games, including a musical narrative adventure. We even got our hands on one of their games called Bounty Star, which combines life sim vibes with hunting for bounties in a post-post-apocalyptic world.
Did you know the head designer for Magic: The Gathering is a huge Spider-Man fan? Mark Rosewater’s excitement for this set contributed greatly to how faithful it is to Spidey’s mythos. Iconic comic book covers, balancing Peter Parker and his alter ego, and totally new mechanics are all part of this webslinging set, and it’s available at your local game shop today.
After all the discourse surrounding this game’s performance issues, it’s no surprise that the Switch 2 release has been pulled for now. However, things don’t seem that dire for Gearbox, considering they’ve already hit 2.5 million units sold.
New in Games
In the latest installment of “I can’t believe we live in this reality,” the Department of Homeland Security has released a “gotta catch ‘em all” video celebrating all the ICE raids that are happening across America. It’s in poor taste, using a playful song from a children’s show to celebrate the forced kidnapping and capture of fellow human beings.
The Pokemon Company issued a statement saying they did not grant the DHS permission to use their IP, but that’s the end of things so far. If they don’t sue, that would be unfortunate, considering how Pokemon and Nintendo tend to throw their legal weight around. I fully expect the new Animal Crossing inspired Palworld spinoff to receive the full ire of Pikachu and Tom Nook.
In related Nintendo news, the president of its American branch, Doug Bowser, will step down in December, paving the way for current marketing executive VP Devon Pritchard to step in to the role.
This hotly anticipated re-release has been a long time coming, and it’s a great way to re-experience a tactical classic. Even better, it’s an accessible way for first-time players to enjoy it.
Opinion Writer Anson Chan dives into whether the live-service realm is too saturated by one culprit: HoYoverse. The online powerhouse is behind so many games now ever since Genshin Impact took off, and they even just announced a brand new one called Petit Planet.
