What's the Latest on the Switch 2?

Pre-orders are still hazy.

The Latest on the Nintendo Switch 2

Once again, politics intersects with video games. As we reported last week, Nintendo delayed Switch 2 pre-orders in the U.S. because of President Trump’s tariff troubles. Those delays have also hit Canada, which is just a little bit of collateral damage courtesy of the good ol’ Red, White, and Blue.

Granted, those tariffs have been paused (kind of) at the time of writing, but frankly, this sort of market volatility makes it impossible to predict anything, especially for a company as fiscally conservative as Nintendo.

Additionally, China might not even get the Switch 2 at all. Thanks to overbearing government regulation and scrutiny, Nintendo is weighing whether the effort is worth the sales.

There’s also been some confusion around physical game cartridges for the console, and Nintendo has clarified that Switch 2 carts will come with both the Switch 1 version of the game and the Switch 2 upgrade (for games this can apply to). This means you won’t have to download anything extra—well, outside of potential future patches.

And you might remember the Welcome Tour, which looks like a glorified Switch 2 manual. It will cost extra money instead of being packaged in with the console, and our editor in chief Andrew Otton compared it to Wii Sports, which did come packaged with the Wii—even though it almost didn’t.

Another year, another summer of abundant game announcements. Geoff Keighley confirmed the dates for this year’s Summer Game Fest. There will be ticket sales for the public to attend, with details coming out in May.

Xbox also confirmed its summer showcase date, with an added focus on The Outer Worlds 2. Obsidian has been working overtime these past few years—remember it also launched Avowed just two months ago, too.

Our Senior Editor Andrew Stretch is up to his usual shenanigans and got sucked into another extremely deep puzzle game with lots to explore. This time, it’s Blue Prince, a roguelite puzzle game that he “beat” at hour 18—and wrote the review at hour 68.

That’s not the only indie game that came out yesterday. Promise Mascot Agency, the next game from the Paradise Killer devs, stars the voice actor for Kazuma Kiryu from the Like a Dragon series. It looks absolutely unhinged, and I definitely want to dive into it, too.

Spanning across four categories, the American Tabletop Awards has revealed what it believes to be the best tabletop games of 2025. The categories are Early Gamers (for younger/newer players), Casual Games, Strategy Games, and Complex Games.

Toriyama also worked on the 2020 Demon’s Souls remake, and his new studio will focus on making “high-end console” games, along with VR and XR titles.
